These are true stories of men and women who have been challenged by (and who, often enough, have chosen to challenge) the wealth that has become theirs by virtue of inheritance. They have been born to the bright promise of money, but have also learned that such a lot is not without plenty of potential hazards, if not outright dangers. It is, I fear, all too easy for many of us who have never faced this particular kind of situation to be somewhat skeptical of the very real threats it can pose.

For Love and/or Money:
The Impact of Inherited Wealth on Relationships
I N T R O D U C T I O N
Not long ago, my co-author Katherine Gibson gave a presentation on the emotional challenges facing heirs. Afterwards, a young man came up to Katherine with tears in his eyes and said, "What you were talking about sounds so familiar to me. I didn't know there was anybody else in my situation. It's such a relief to learn there are other people like me."
John Dawson, the young man at the conference, has so far received only a portion of his inheritance. Even so, he fears that he is already branded. He asks himself, "What if I have this big red 'I' on my forehead, which stands for 'Inheritor'?" Although he has a full-time job and appears to fit in with his co-workers, he is always aware how much his financial situation separates him from everyone else at the office. "It's the subtle things of knowing that you're different," he explains. "When people talk about trying to pay off their credit cards, I have no idea what that feels like."
